The Rides

Check out the timetable of great rides and activities planned below, with links to maps of all rides.   Ride courses are currently provisional, and will be confirmed closer to the event.

Friday 1 September 2017 

Arrive in Cairns and stay at the Holiday Inn or your choice of accommodation.

4.30pm – 7pm  Registration at the Salthouse Restaurant – Cairns Pier on Cairns Esplanade (southern end).

Check in at the pier on Cairns Esplanade and  collect your ride information and gear, including Brevets.  Lighting checks will be conducted for all GT riders and for 6 Pack riders planning to undertake a 200km ride.  Food will be provided and a cash bar is available from the Salt House restaurant.

All gear and bike boxes that are not being taken on the ride are to be brought to the registration area for tagging and transfer to the storage sheds on Friday evening.


Saturday 2 September 2017 – Cairns to Mena Creek

Ride from Cairns Pier through the back streets of the city to the open farmlands beyond.  While the 100km course heads south, the 200km riders take a quick diversion up the Lake Morris Road to obtain sweeping views of the city and ocean.  Both rides wind south across the flat roads of the coast and through canefields to Mena Creek.  Riders can relax on the verandah of the local pub before enjoying an included tour of Paronella Park – the castle in the rainforest.

Riders can purchase their own lunch along the way at one of the many cafes, or at Mena Creek or Paronella Park on arrival.

5.45am – Rider check-in opens at the Cairns Pier (Cairns Esplanade)

6.15am – Ride briefing

6.30am – Ride starts Cairns to Mena Creek

Afternoon – Take an afternoon tour through Paronella Park and hear the story of this beautiful European style leisure garden and castle in the rainforest.  Enjoy a coffee in the gardens or relax on the deck of Mena Creek Hotel.  Tours and entry to Paronella Park are included in your registration.

Evening – Join us for a roast dinner at Mena Creek Hotel, then catch an evening lights tour of Paronella Park.  Or head to bed early to prepare for a big day on the bike tomorrow.

Overnight at Mena Creek – Riders will be accommodated in a range of options in cabins, campsites and BnB’s at Mena Creek and nearby areas.



Sunday 3 September 2017 – Mena Creek to Innot Hot Springs

200km and 300km riders start with a circuit around the beautiful Mission Beach area, where they may be lucky to spot a cassowary in the rainforest.   Then join the 100km ride course to continue up the relatively gentle climb of the Palmerston Highway, with a stop at Mungalli Creek Dairy, famous for its amazing biodynamic dairy produce.  At the top of the range is the small dairying township of Millaa Millaa, which is perfect for a coffee break before continuing onto the wind farms of Ravenshoe.  Head south into the drier areas of North Queensland to the tiny township of Innot Hot Springs.  Innot’s hot springs are world renowned for their healing properties, and riders can relax in the many pools in the complex.

Afternoon – Relax in the hot pools at Innot Hot Springs, and take in a few quiet ones in the country pub atmosphere.  Choose from the landscaped pools in the park, or take a plunge in the hot pools of the creek.

Evening – Have an evening meal at the pub, and enjoy the quietness and night sky in this tiny country township.

Monday 5 September 2017 – Innot Hot Springs

It is a well earned rest day for the GT riders, who can choose between relaxing in the hot pools or an optional side trip to Undara Lava Tubes.  Six Pack riders indulge in a taste of outback cycling through scrub country, with a 100km or 200km out-and-back loop.  Plenty of time to return to Innot Hot Springs pub to enjoy a country pizza night with their wood fired pizza oven.

5.30am – 8.30am – Continental breakfast at Innot Hot Springs Hotel

6.00am – 6 Pack check-in (100km and 200km)

6.15am – 6 Pack ride briefing

6.30am – 6 Pack ride start – Innot Hot Springs return

Evening – It’s pizza night at the pub.  Dine al fresco with great wood fired pizzas freshly prepared.  Overnight at Innot Hot Springs.

Tuesday 5 September 2017 – Innot Hot Springs to Atherton

The 100km and 200km 6 Pack rides head back to the greener scenery of the Atherton Tablelands, taking in some of the best scenery along the way.  The GT riders have an early start for their 400km, and get a taste of the dry country with a starting loop out to Mt Surprise.  Watch the sunrise over the scrub, before returning north towards Atherton – our base for the next few days.

Afternoon and Evening –  Check in to your base at Woodlands Caravan Park for the next few days in Atherton, then spend some time relaxing in the pool or visiting the local coffee shops.  Dine out in Atherton or self-cater in the camp kitchen.

Overnight to 12.30pm Wednesday 6 September 2017 – FNQGT 400km arrives.  Meal provided for GT riders on arrival.

Wednesday 6 September 2017 – Atherton Tablelands

As the GT riders are coming in from their 400km ride, the 6 Pack riders are heading out for a day of sightseeing on the 200km Eight Tableland Towns course, or the 100km version – Six Tableland Towns.   Visit Tolga, Mareeba, Walkamin, Kairi, Yungaburra, Peeramon and Malanda, with plenty of stops for coffee and photos, before returning to Atherton.  Have a great ride, then enjoy a finishing meal together and 6 Pack medal presentation at Woodlands Holiday Park in Atherton.

6.30am – Ride start – Eight Tableland Towns in a Day

Evening – Enjoy a dinner together to celebrate the last night of the combined 6 Pack and Gran Turismo in Atherton.

Thursday 7 September 2017 – Atherton to Cairns

It’s the final day of the 6 Pack, and the rides take different routes for the trip back to Cairns.  The 200km riders take off earlier to travel north for a scenic trip through Mossman, Port Douglas and along the Cook Highway.   The 100km ride heads down the Gillies Highway.  Both rides finish at the Holiday Inn on the Esplanade.   Enjoy a meal on arrival, then lounge around on the deck and share a drink and stories of your adventure as other 6 Pack riders arrive.

It’s another rest day for the GT riders in Atherton, as they prepare for their 600km leg tomorrow.

Friday 8 September 2017 – Atherton to Cairns GT600km

The last big ride of the Gran Turismo series is a cracker.  It takes in the best of the Atherton scenery, before heading north through Mareeba and Dimbulah.  Have an overnight stop in Mt Molloy, before heading down the Rex Range and onto the coast.  Finish your series with some spectacular riding through the World Heritage listed rainforest of the Daintree and have a break at Port Douglas.  Ride along the beautiful coast of the Cook Highway on your way back to Cairns.

5.00am – GT rider check-in (600km Atherton to Cairns 40 hours)

Saturday 9 September 2017

The ride finishes at the Holiday Inn on the Cairns Esplanade, and a meal is available on arrival.  Overnight accommodation in the Holiday Inn on the Esplanade is included.

Sunday 10 September 2017

Celebrate the end of the Far North Queensland Gran Turismo with a breakfast at the Salthouse on Cairns Pier (Cairns Esplanade) and award presentation at 10am on Sunday morning.
